Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)
Raising Awareness About TSS.

Understanding Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)
We believe it’s important for our customers to be informed about all aspects of menstrual health, including rare conditions like Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). While our tampons are safe when used correctly, understanding TSS is crucial for every menstruating individual.
What is Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)?
TSS is a rare but potentially serious condition associated with the use of tampons, particularly super-absorbent tampons. It’s caused by toxins produced by certain strains of bacteria, most commonly Staphylococcus aureus. While it’s most often linked to tampon use, TSS can also occur with other types of medical devices or even as a result of certain infections.
Symptoms of TSS
TSS can develop quickly and requires immediate medical attention. Symptoms can include:
- High fever
- Rash resembling a sunburn, particularly on the palms and soles
- Low blood pressure
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Muscle aches
- Headache
- Confusion or disorientation
- Seizures
If you experience any of these symptoms while using tampons, remove the tampon immediately and seek medical attention right away.
Reducing the Risk of TSS
While TSS is rare, there are steps you can take to minimize the risk:
- Choose the lowest absorbency tampon necessary for your flow. Avoid using super-absorbent tampons unless absolutely needed.
- Change your tampon regularly, ideally every 4-8 hours, or as needed.
- Wash your hands thoroughly before and after inserting or removing a tampon.
- Consider alternating between tampons and sanitary pads.
- Do not use tampons if you have a history of TSS.
- Consult your doctor if you have any concerns or questions about tampon use or TSS.
